Colorism affects an abundance of people of color, but mainly African Americans. It roots back to early slavery. White slave owners often had what was called a “house” Negro. The “house” Negro was most often a light-skinned slave.Colorism is the allocation of privilege and disadvantage according to the lightness or darkness of one’s skin. The practices of colorism tend to favor lighter skin over darker skin, although in rare cases the opposite practice also occurs.
